Judges
The leaders of the Children of Israel after Moses death and until Saul was made King, were refered to as Judges. Joshua was the first judge, and the history of the Children of Israel during the period of the remaining judges except for Samuel, the last judge, is recorded here. During this period, there is a regular cycle of apostacy, often in the form of idolatory, being followed by God's judgement from one or other of the surrounding nations. This is followed by God raising up a judge to deliver the people, and the people returning to the LORD with confession of their sin. It is a remarkable narrative of man's sinfulness and God's patience and mercy. Who wrote this book is not certain, but may have been Samuel, the last of the judges. Amongst the list of judges refered to in this book, we find the narrative of Samson. The times that this book speaks of last for about 300 years, starting in about 1367 BC.
