Introduction

  1. This relates the Israel's starting out.
  2. There is a new phase starting. (Explain).
  3. God had made it easy at first...but...
    OBSERVE: God has lessons for us to learn along the way from grace to Glory.

  1. NO WATER TO DRINK

    1. Serious situation - c.2 million persons in a desert! Water is essential. There was none.
    2. God had been teaching them: (i) their experience at Marah (chap. 15). (ii) no food - manna (chap. 16).
    3. Now - a desert without water!
    4. Why did God do this? (i) Life appears to go wrong (ii) See their bad mood - v.2-3-4.
      LESSON: To live by faith in God always.

  2. TEMPTING THE LORD

    1. v.2 : "tempt". Also v.7. It is referred to in Psalm 95.
    2. Tempt = to distrust God: Illustration: Christ's temptation.
    3. See the bad mood: "chide"/"murmur"/"stone".
    4. They always want to go back to Egypt!
      LESSON: When God tests our faith we so often sink and fall into fears, doubts and ill-moods.
      DOCTRINE: It is hard to live BY FAITH.

  3. GOD HOLDS THE KEY TO ALL SITUATIONS

    1. Even Moses cries: "What shall I do?" (v.4).
      OBSERVE: We are at our wit's end at times.
    2. But God has the answer (v.5-6).
      OBSERVE: God holds all the keys.
      Illustration: "Master-Key".
    3. "Smite the rock": Lesson = Believe God.
    4. So Christ taught: mountain/fig-tree/Peter on the water.
      APPLICATION: Go to God with your problem.

  4. THE SPIRITUAL LIFE IS A FIGHT TO THE FINISH

    1. Hardly has one problem ended when - another!
    2. Amalek = deadly enemies of God's people (v.16).
      OBSERVE: You must have enemies - see even Christ.
    3. God will teach us to fight - no rest on earth.
    4. See what trouble they now have (v.9-10).
      LESSON: The Christian must fight all his life. These are but shadows of our enemies: the world, the flesh and the devil.

  5. THE CHURCH'S PROGRESS IS ALWAYS CLOSELY RELATED TO HER PRAYERFULNESS

    1. A great picture, full of instruction here.
    2. See Moses' part - the clear lesson of v.11.
    3. "It is a praying people that will get through".
    4. But Moses too needed help.
      LESSON: There is work, effort, steadfastness required in prayer.APPLICATION: Are you doing this?

  6. ALL OUR ENEMIES WILL BE SUBDUED AT LAST

    1. v.13 shows how Israel prevailed at last.
    2. "More than conquerors" - See Romans 16:20.
    3. Let this calm all our fears:
      1. Satan will be crushed at last
      2. indwelling sin will be removed
      3. the world will be renewed in glory

CONCLUSION

  • How like Israel we are!
  • God was teaching them lessons on the way.
  • Have we seen the answer? - God has the key!
