Introduction

  1. A great change referred to here.
  2. All because of one man.
  3. One evil man can do much harm.
  1. THE DIVISION AMONG THE PEOPLE OF GOD

    1. Divisions must occur among God's people - names for them - examples of them.
    2. This division which occurs here and why.
    3. The classic mistake of Rehoboam (v.8, 13).
    4. Factors in all divisions: (i) pride (ii) rebellion against light (v.19) (iii) bitterness (v.21) (iv) alienation ("a brother offended...") (v) separation.
    5. The most precious things to notice: (i) the worship of God - kept/lost (ii) God's sovereignty.
  2. THE SINFULNESS OF THE HUMAN HEART

    1. Jeroboam's evil motive: v.26-27
OBSERVE: Very sinful: (i) he was prepared to go to any lengths to save himself (ii) he had no faith in God (v.24).
    2. Bad politicians destroy their nations and ruin the souls of their own subjects:
OBSERVE: In the moral/spiritual realm all must now change - just to suit one man!
    3. The battle is for the human heart (v.27: "the heart of this people".
APPLICATION: Do we not see it in our own day?
LESSON: In a time of change in the things of God we must watch our own heart.
  3. HOW QUICKLY CHANGES CAN COME ABOUT IN THE WORSHIP OF GOD

    1. Some ages are full of change: (i) new nation (ii) new king (iii) new church services.
OBSERVE: All this in a few months! What of our own nation?
    2. Look how extensive these changes are:
    3. 2 golden calves. Recall Exodus 32.
    4. "priests of the lowest of the people", v.31
    5. all these new services "devised of his own heart" (v.33).
APPLICATION: If we could see it this is so in the UK.
  4. WHAT ARE WE TO DO TO PROTECT OUR SOULS FROM SUCH CHANGES AS THESE?

    1. Realise how precious true religion is. Good men die for it. (Daniel's three friends/all the prophets of OT/all the apostles...).
    2. If we do not value God's worship we shall be in danger of losing it (Rev. 3: "spew...").
    3. In every division, be sure you follow the "good old ways". Watch for the changes.
    4. Realise that new changes are really old errors rehashed (2 golden calves!)
    5. Love Christ's religion in its entirety and do not go along with changes.

CONCLUSION

Lessons for us all:

  1. Know your Bible.
  2. The catechism.
