Introduction

  1. The Flood - why God sent it.
  2. God rules in the affairs of men.
  3. But soon, another crisis arises: The Tower of Babel.
  1. EVENTS LEADING UP TO THE TOWER OF BABEL

    1. The catastrophic effects of the Flood. Also:
      1. promise of future immunity (9:11-12)
      2. the covenant and its sign - rainbow (9:13f)
        APPLICATION: God delights in mercy rather than judgement.
    2. The good and the evil effects of Noah's sons' conduct:
      1. Noah's drunkenness. A warning.
      2. the unfilial behaviour of Ham...
      3. the filial reaction of Shem and Japheth...
        APPLICATION: Our behaviour will affect our children.
    3. The rise of Nimrod and his evil influence.
      OBSERVE: See 10:8f. Note. Also Peleg (10:25).
  2. THE ATTEMPT TO BUILD THE TOWER

    1. The purpose of God (9:7).
    2. The migration from Ararat to Babylonia (11:1-2).
    3. The empire of Nimrod (10:10f).
    4. The scheme to build a city and tower to the glory of man - in defiance of God.
      OBSERVE: The corruption of religion - see Romans 1.
    5. The godless motive - to defy God (11:4).
    6. The materials of this city (11:3).
      OBSERVE: Psalm 2 shows us this proud spirit in man.
    7. The unity of human language at first (11:1)
      OBSERVE: Remember how Revelation uses this term "Babylon" to refer to the corrupt church and its influence on the whole world.(N.B. The country is called Iraq today).
  3. THE JUDGEMENT OF GOD ON THE TOWER

    1. God's assessment of their rebellion: v.5.
    2. Sin would destroy all good on earth if God did not restrain it: v.6.
    3. The ease with which God frustrates their rebellious scheme: v.7.
    4. The plan of God secured by this judgement.
    5. "Babel" - a monument to God's power to humble the pride of man.
      APPLICATION: False religion + human tyranny will not last forever.

LESSONS FOR OURSELVES

  1. People must choose between Babel + Bible.
  2. Pentecost is God's way of uniting the world.
  3. In the end, all the Lord's people will be of one speech and all of one mind in Christ.
