There are 10 such "generations" in Genesis. Examples: 2:4; 6:9; 37:2.
The term "generations" is used loosely - to summarise the subject dealt with.
Ten patriarchs up to the Flood.
World population increased very rapidly.
OBSERVE: The Covenant of Grace is seen here.
The two families on the earth (i) that of Seth (ii) that of Cain. Their real difference: (i) their faith (ii) their attitude to life as a whole. SUM: God-centred v. man-centred.
APPLICATION:
"begat sons and daughters" - repeated.
In obedience to God's will: "Be fruitful".
APPLICATION: The Christian family a wonderful thing.
DOCTRINE: In evil days the Christian family can be a place of safety and a nursery of true piety.
This was an inspired prophecy. The name of NOAH means "Rest", "Comfort".
OBSERVE: God gave prophecies in these days. What does the prophecy mean?
APPLICATION: Noah, like Christ, gives "rest". However burdened we are in this sinful world, Christ can give us rest". (See Matthew 11:28-30)
