Introduction

  1. You cannot make sense of life if you do not read the Bible.
  2. Because evil is a shocking thing.
  3. This chapter tells us about the effects of man's sin.
  1. SIN: ITS EFFECTS ON MAN'S WORSHIP: v.1-5

    1. Worship outside the Garden of Eden.
    2. "In process of time" - meaning (v.3).
    3. God's "respect" (v.4-5). Explain.
    4. What is acceptable worship?
      APPLICATION: Courage needed to shun idolatry.
  2. SIN: ITS EFFECTS ON MAN'S NATURE: v.5-7

    1. Cain's anger - how do we explain it?
    2. It illustrates the "enmity" (3:15).
    3. The soul and body of the sinner affected: v.6.
    4. The remedy proposed by God: v.7.
      APPLICATION: Sin, like fire, burns with fury.
  3. SIN: THE CRIME OF MURDER: v.8-15

    1. The nature of sin: the go to the utmost.
    2. The murderer will answer to God.
    3. The punishment of Cain.
    4. Capital Punishment?
      APPLICATION: See how sin matures in one generation!
  4. SIN: SOCIETY ORGANISED AGAINST GOD: v. 16-18

    1. Cain's departure "from the presence of" God: v.16.
    2. The two "halves" of the human fall.
    3. Cain's ungodly line here given.
    4. Picture of society without God.
      APPLICATION: This picture is, sadly, to be seen all around us today.
    5. Godless societies derive from godly ones.
  5. SIN: COMMON GRACE STILL GIVEN: v.19-24

    1. How the term "Common Grace" is used.
    2. Lamech: bigamy now in the world.
    3. God's outward gifts to men.
    4. The cruelty of Lamech: v.24.
      APPLICATION: See how God's mercy is shown in the midst of men's rebellion.
  6. SIN: SAVING GRACE STILL GIVEN: v.25-26

    1. The birth of Seth - "another seed".
    2. The godly line now beginning.
      APPLICATION: The importance of family religion.
    3. The beginnings of public worship to be seen in v.26.

CONCLUSION

  1. See how realistic the Bible is.
  2. God's church is called on to live in such a world.
