Introduction

  1. chapter 1 is cosmic
  2. chapter 2 is centred on mankind
  3. man is perfect at first

  1. THE ORDINANCE OF MARRIAGE: 2:18f

    1. The first man is perfect but incomplete.
    2. The creation of the woman. Hebrew words.
    3. God's intention in marriage.
    4. Order in marriage: male headship.
    5. Sin has damaged marriage.
    6. Divorce: 2 grounds for it
      APPLICATION: The family is the basic unity.

  2. THE SABBATH: 2:1-3

    1. Argument for a literal "day" (YOM).
    2. Six days of work + one of rest is God's pattern. It is the best way.
    3. OT and NT Sabbath - the change.
    4. In what sense did God "rest"?
    5. How are we to rest on the Sabbath?
    6. The ultimate Sabbath in heaven See Hebrews 4:8-11
      APPLICATION: We need to observe this.

  3. THE ORDINANCE OF LABOUR: 2:15

    1. The Garden of Eden: work to do.
    2. Work to be viewed as a blessing.
    3. Sin has perverted this view.
    4. The gospel makes people industrious.
    5. "- sat down to eat...rose up to play".
    6. The world is God's - to be cared for.
    7. We are to work for six days.
      APPLICATION: Do not shun work - Get a profitable job.

  4. OBEDIENCE TO GOD'S WORD: 2:16-17

    1. God speaks here to Adam, as the Covenant-head of the whole race.
    2. The command explained.
    3. The penalty for disobedience.
    4. The principle: man must do what God commands.
    5. This is right, reasonable, good.
    6. Our need, now, of a Saviour.
