Introduction

  1. How Paul quotes from OT
  2. He does so to show man's sinfulness
  3. In order to point to the Remedy
REL: Do you realise you need this Remedy?
  1. IT IS A GREAT SIN NOT TO SEEK GOD

    1. People seek everything but not God:
      1. The honour of a king: Illustration: Wolsey
      2. The fame of a politician: Illustration: Burke
      3. Recognition as a scholar:
APPLICATION: They have disappointment at last.
    2. The Bible shows this failure to seek God:
      1. Adam's sin + Eve's
      2. David's sin
      3. Judas' sin + of the Pharisees
      4. Pilate's sin also - alas!
APPLICATION: This is the refrain in every Christless life - "He did not seek God".
  2. ALL THE MISERIES OF THIS WORLD CAN BE TRACED BACK TO THIS SIN:

    1. How can anyone be really happy without God?
      1. We were made for fellowship with Him.
      2. Our heart is made to be a temple
APPLICATION: Sin has made our heart like a hearth when the fire has gone out.
    2. Why do we not seek God?
      1. Sin has blinded us to His loveliness.
ILLUSTRATION: all the beauty in the world!
      2. Pride makes men "stiff-necked" - the perfect description of us all:
ILLUSTRATION: Pharaoh / Rabshakeh / Belshazzar
      3. People are afraid of God - guilty: ILLUSTRATION: Adam - his fear, guilt, shame.
    3. The sinner is fascinated and bewitched by sin:
      ILLUSTRATION: the moth & candle.
APPLICATION: Do you want me to tell you how you will end up if you neglect God? See Proverbs 1:22f
  3. YOU WILL BE SAVED AND BLESSED AS SOON AS YOU SEEK GOD

    1. Why should you punish yourself? The answer to all problems is HERE: To seek God.
    2. There are examples of it in God's Word:
      1. Psalm 34:4-6
      2. Psalm 107:25-31
      3. Jacob and his fear of Esau (Genesis 32:24)
APPLICATION: This is our greatest need - to seek God - even as Christians - our prayers can become so routine.
    3. Look at these PROMISES:
      1. "Seek and ye shall find".
      2. "Ye shall seek me...".
      3. "Turn ye...why will ye die?"

CONCLUSION

"Behold, he prayeth" (Paul)!
