Introduction

  1. A request for a series on FAITH.
  2. Hebrews 11 is a picture and gallery.
  3. The great lesson is: to have faith
  1. FAITH IS EVERYWHERE IN THE BIBLE SAID TO BE THE WAY FOR US TO BE SAVED

      1. Abraham was saved by faith. (Proof)So was Jacob. (See Genesis 28)
      2. The Jews in the wilderness. (Hebrews v.4)
      3. David also (Psalm 32). Paul interprets this
      4. The NT is the same: John 3:16: Romans 3-5
DOCTRINE: All who were ever saved, were saved by faith - from Adam to this day.
    1. Salvation by faith alone is the great secret of the godly life:
      1. "The just shall live by faith"
      2. "From faith to faith": Illustration: eye and hand
      3. "Without faith it is impossible to please God"
      4. "Go in peace, thy faith hath saved thee."
      5. "All things are possible to him that believeth" (e.g. to move mountains)
    2. So, our progress as Christians is related to our progress in faith:
      1. "O ye of little faith"
      2. Abraham was "strong in faith..."
APPLICATION: Have you realised that the thing which you most need is faith?
  2. WHY DOES THE BIBLE PLACE SO MUCH IMPORTANCE ON FAITH?

    * There must be good reasons. What are they?

    1. Because faith is a PASSIVE grace. It is an empty hand that receives mercy.
APPLICATION: So it leaves no place for pride or for boasting.
(See Romans 4) God will not share the glory of salvation with US.
    2. Because faith makes God true, it makes all who disagree with Him liars.
Exx. Joshua + Caleb: Paul at his conversion.
    3. Because faith receives Christ and His Benefits
"As many as received HIM", i.e. Christ - these have justification and all else.
APPLICATION: What a wonderful thing faith is! It brings all blessings to us at once.
    4. Because faith reverses Adam's sin
Adam's sin flowed from unbelief. He made God a liar.
APPLICATION: So do all who deny eternal punishment.
    5. Because faith is the father of all goodness
      1. A man who disbelieves the Bible is likely to drift into all wickedness.
      2. A man who believes the Bible is likely to excel in every virtue.
APPLICATION: So you see how excellent a grace faith is and how much we should seek it.
  3. FAITH IN OUR LIFE WILL BRING GREAT BLESSINGS INTO OUR EXPERIENCE

    * Faith transforms life - the life of faith is never dull, boring, ordinary.

    1. See Abraham pleading for Lot in Sodom
Faith gave him this nearness to God.
APPLICATION: would you not like this blessing?
    2. See Joshua - the sun stood still!
      APPLICATION: What power in faith!
    3. See Esther - went to the King
      APPLICATION: Faith gives courage (Daniel)
    4. See Hezekiah - the Assyrian beaten
APPLICATION: Do you not see that all your problems/enemies/fears are to be overcome by faith?
    5. See ENOCH - never died!
APPLICATION: So in another sense all the Lord's people will escape death. "O death, where is thy sting...?"

CONCLUSION

  1. This is people's one great and tragic problem: NO FAITH.
  2. No wonder Christ said: "Be not faithless but believing"!
