Introduction
- God's appearance here to Solomon
- A very helpful verse
- Relevant to each and all of us
WHY SHOULD WE HUMBLE OURSELVES?
- Because there is so little blessing
- Society is under God's judgement
- So few seeking the Lord
- So few being converted
- Preaching has very little effect
- Common grace also is removed
- Government has no vision - or else no will to carry it out.
APPLICATION: Do you look at life like this?
HOW SHOULD WE HUMBLE OURSELVES?
- We have all added to the sin
- Only God can remove these evils
- We have examples: Ezra 9; Neh. 9; Dan. 9.
- We set ourselves to abase ourselves before God and we open our heart
- With a readiness to change our evil ways and turn back to God
- "Seek my face". Explain.
- In confidence that God will hear us.
OBSERVE: Is there not great need for this?
"When nations are to perish in their sins
'Tis in the church the leprosy begins".
WHAT ENCOURAGES US TO HUMBLE OURSELVES?
God loves a contrite heart
Proof: Ps. 51; Isa. 57:15; Rev. 3:19.
- God is calling us to it today
- Everything else has failed
- God Himself gives this as the way to go in an evil day.
- There are biblical examples to encourage us: e.g. Judges, Josiah
- This text is itself is an encouragement
- Who knows what God may do in answer to our prayers?
- we need fresh blessing
- we need new members/adherents
- we need more of God's presence
- we need power in our preaching
CONCLUSION
- Do we believe this promise?
- Do we take to heart the promise that God "gives grace to the humble"?
